Baiyoke
Thailand's symbol of the
tallest
Sep.
2005 When
anyone
mentions
to
me
of
Baiyoke,
I
will
always
think
of
Thailand's
tallest
buildings.
From
the
past
to
the
present,
Baiyoke
1
and
Baiyoke
Tower,
respectively.
To
me,
Baiyoke
means
Thailand's
tallest.
Baiyoke
Tower
stands
at
309
meters
tall,
the
tallest
building
in
Thailand.
The
building
houses
Baiyoke
Sky
Hotel,
boasts
one
of
the
world's
tallest
hotels.
Floor
84
of
the
building
is
opened
for
visitors
to
a panoramic
view
of
Bangkok.
I
recommend
being
here
in
the
evening
to
see
the
beautiful
sunset
and
the
city
lights.
And
you
may
take
this
opportunity
to
have
a
skyview
dinner
at
a
restaurant
on
floor
77.
Next
to
Baiyoke
Tower
is
Baiyoke
1,
the
former
tallest
building
consisting
of
42
stories.
About
half
the
height
of
Baiyoke
Tower.
Among
Thais,
Baiyoke
is
popular
for
its
huge
clothing
market
located
on
the
ground
floors.
(It's
so
huge
that
there
are
more
than
one
ground
floor.)
This
is
also
where
traders,
Thais
and
non-Thais,
do
wholesale
orders.
Retail
is
also
acceptable
unless
otherwise
noted
and
prices
are
very
cheap
in
general.
(For
samples
of
retail
clothing
prices,
see
below.)
If
not
for
shopping,
some
Thais
would
occasionally
come
here
for
a
sky
view
meal
or
a
business
reception.
Every
new
year,
this
tallest
building
will
display
a
huge
stop
watch
to
help
in
the
year-end
count
down
celebration.
Unlike
some
cities
where
the
tallest
building
is
situated
in
classy
financial
centers,
Baiyoke
is
right
in
one
of
Bangkok's
biggest
clothing
markets
and
yet
one
of
oldest
street
markets,
Pratunam
Market.

The
two
towers.
Thailand's former
tallest, Baiyoke
1(1)
and
the
present,
Baiyoke
Tower(2).
Baiyoke 1,
is about
half shorter
than Baiyoke
Tower,
Thailand's
tallest
building.
The owner of
Baiyoke once
said there's
nothing he
can do
better than
"the
tallest
buildings".
Entrance
to
Baiyoke
buildings
on
Petchaburi
road
is
jammed
with
hundreds
of
clothing
stores.
If
distracted
by
these
stores,
you
may
take
over
an
hour
instead
of
15
minutes
to
walk
to
the
buildings.
(And
it
is
very
likely
you
will
be
distracted.)
Also
sometimes,
you
may
experience
pedestrian
traffic
jam
here
because
there
can
be
so
many
shoppers.
Most
stores
open
10.30am
to
5.30pm.
so
it
is
better
to
come
in
the
afternoon.
Make
sure
you
carry
drinking
water
because the heat
can
be
an experience.
Mar.
2006 Thousands
of
shops,
millions
of
clothes.
Baiyoke
has
more
than
enough
clothes
for
you
to
choose.
1.
Many
people
end
up
like
this
lady
from
shopping
here.
(Or
you
may
end
up
as
well!)
Be
fit
with
your
legs
and
arms.
Most
important
your
cash!
2.
If
you
see
big
bags
like
these
sitting
on
the
sidewalk,
they
likely
belong
to
the
street
merchants.
Street
merchants
buy
wholesale
clothes
here
and
sell
at
retail
prices
in
the
street
market.
